Three probes into fifty years of the developments in the study subject "Information studies and library science" (J. Cejpek) ... p. 135-146

The first probe - "Origin of the subject and workplace" - puts the origin of the lectorate of librarianship in 1950 into a context with events which preceded it and into the social and political environment at the end of 40s and beginning of 50s. The second probe - ,,Two attempts how to reform the study" - analyses the attempt trying to re form the study around the year 1968 which came to no thing by "normalization", and a successful reform of the study after 1989. The third probe - Quo vadis universitas - points out the present state and the trends of development of the study subject "information studies and library science" from the view of present trends of development of universities in democratic countries. The text is supplemented by a chronological survey of important events in fifty years of development of the Institute of Information Studies and Library Science.

Creative works, systems of information about them and new international standard numbers and codes (E. Bratková) ... p. 147-155

In the centre of author's attention are some questions of identification of creative works as "intangible" entities: (bibliographic items) within digital system environment. The first parts of the article (1-3) comprises issues of the need and the development of new effective Electronic Copyright Management System (ECMS) to which belongs, for example, the "Common Information System" (CIS) project managed by CISAC or the international research project and initiative of rights owners INDECS aimed to the metadata model of such systems. The last part of the article (4) involves detailed information about international standards for identification of creative works which are being prepared by authorized ISO working groups. The first standard ISAN will serve to identification of audiovisual works, the other one ISWC to identification of musical works. The text of this part involves commentary to definitions of main concepts, to the structure of international standard number and code and to systems of their assignment including metadata creation.

Unified titles in cataloguing practice: A contribution to history of cataloguing rules (E. Motzková) ... p. 156-164

In an introductory part of the contribution the concept ,,unified title" is defined as it is understood in present cataloguing practice, and possibilities of its utilization are described.
The paper further deals with history of this concept in cataloguing practice at the turn of the 1 9 and 20" centuries until now in the way in which cataloguing manuals mention it, those ones which had principal importance for the development in cataloguing at that time. It also mentions from which time and for which purposes the unified titles begun to be used, under which rules they were for med, etc.
In more details it deals with general rules which are id force now as for forming the unified titles (i.e. AACR2R/ 1994-5). It deals mainly with the rules for unified titles for the Bible.
The author compares the use of unified titles in past with their use at present and on the basis of this comparison she evaluates their contribution to present cataloguing practice.

Automated union catalogues in the Czech Republic (E. Bulinová)  ... p. 165-173

The article analyses selected automated union catalogues (UCs) in the Czech Republic. The analysis undertakes large institutional (primarily academic) union catalogues working more than five years. There are included the UCs of Palacký University Olomouc, the Charles University in Prague, Czech Technical University in Prague, The Academy of Science of the Czech Republic as well UCs CASLIN (Czech national UCs), public libraries UCs (SCAT) and main regional libraries UCs (KAKS). The special methodology was invented for the UCs evaluation that consists of five criteria for UCs bibliographic records analysis: completeness, main and added entries, duplicity, location data and user interface. The results of the analysis are quantified and summarized to the review table. The advantages and disadvantages of particular UCs are discussed in the conclusion.
