implement Conspectus method and to make search and browse access to heterogeneous information resources more
efficient supposes to improve subject/browsing structure scheme used by the subject-oriented services.
Hierarchical structure of the schemes applied by the searching services is discussed and compared with the
schemes used in traditional classifications. It is well known that full integration of universal classification
schemes improves browsing capabilities, facilitates the creation of hierarchical subject trees, supports
interoperability with other services and permits multilingual access to registered information resources. A
special attention is paid to the subject categorization of information resources used in Conspectus method; the
concordance of universal classifications (DDC and UDC) from point of view of this method and the entering of
Conspectus data in bibliographic and authority records is discussed.
