The impact of implementation of automated library systems on library organization and processes (J. Mika) ... p. 6-14

The implementation of an automated library system may be considered the first phase of the library automation. In spite of, or just because of the fact that many libraries have finished this phase, the impact of automated library systems on the library running and its organization is still topical to be discussed.
An analysis of the consequences of computerization on library processes is the base of this paper. Modules of an automated library system come from the traditional dividing the operation of a library but at the same time they bring new elements and functions as authority files, standard formats, sharing cataloguing records, using the bar code for recording loans or an inventory. Acquisition, cataloguing and bibliography penetrate each other, name description integrates with subject entry, and circulation has tighter bonds to the processing. The computer-based system is fragile and vulnerable, the maintenance and development of it require financing permanently. The automation has an influence upon the staff, communication and working relations.
The traditional view of an organization structure is static. The automation requires a system approach aimed at the sequence and harmonization of operations, possibilities of integration and the ways the library as a sys tern will respond its targets. The information function of libraries is accented by the automation.

History of Czechoslovak encyclopaedic science until 1945 (D. Hartmanová) ... p. 15-21

History of Czech encyclopaedia from its origin connected with the foundation of the Prague University in 1348 until the effort to compile an original Czech general encyclopaedia in the time of Josef Jungmann and František Palacký crowned by the Rieger encyclopaedia is dealt with. Further the author tries to prove through characterization of important encyclopaedic projects of that time (i.e. Rieger, Otto and Masaryk encyclopaedias) by comparative study of applied encyclopaedic principles and rules established at the origin of individual works that an encyclopaedia is always the same as the era of its origin, as people who compiled it, and as the level of knowledge and learning of that time.
